[19] As he walked along a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. [20] Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

[35] Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” [36] He replied, “What do you wish [me] to do for you?” [37] They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” [38] Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” [39] They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; [40] but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” [41] When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. [42] Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. [43] But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; [44] whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. [45] For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

[51] When he arrived at the house he allowed no one to enter with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother. [52] All were weeping and mourning for her, when he said, “Do not weep any longer, for she is not dead, but sleeping.” [53] And they ridiculed him, because they knew that she was dead. [54] But he took her by the hand and called to her, “Child, arise!” [55] Her breath returned and she immediately arose. He then directed that she should be given something to eat. [56] Her parents were astounded, and he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.

[2] After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, [3] and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. [4] Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. [5] Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” [6] He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. [7] Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”

[32] Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” [33] He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed. [34] Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch.” [35] He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass by him; [36] he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will.” [37] When he returned he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? [38] Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” [39] Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing. [40] Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open and did not know what to answer him. [41] He returned a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. [42] Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is at hand.”
